Sit On Top Kayak Feel Free
One Man, One Kayak, One Channel
ONE MAN, ONE KAYAK, ONE CHANNEL…
On the 9th of April 2010our very own Cliff Meaden (the boss) from Epic Life Water sports in Hastings, East Sussex, crossed the English Channel.
What a beautiful day he chose, wall to wall blue sky and flat calm ocean.
He set of from dungeoness at 6am with a safety boat and crew, just incase!
Approximately 6 hours later tired and sea swept Cliff arrived on the French coast of Cap Gris-Nes. He completed the epic 26 mile journey in a Perception Essence.
Cliff chose the 17ft Essense for its cruising speed, comfort and storage. It’s everything you need for that weeklong, oncein a lifetime trek, or a more exciting day on the water that can onlybe had with a design that’s truly an extension of your body.
Cliff wore a ‘ Yak Escape’ Bouyancy aid, with a fitted camel pack, carrying 1.5L of one third coke, two thirds water, a tip taken for the local adventure racers in the town. Also wearing the Conquest cag, which is one of the highest breath-ability paddle tops on the market, perfect for the mission.
Cliff had been waiting a month for the right weather window, that consists of high pressure sitting over England and giving us light northerly winds, combined with neap tides offering the ideal conditions.
Being one of the biggest shipping channels Cliff came across several big tankers, a few unscheduled stops took place to let them pass. The wash want too much of a problem considering the large sea vehicles passing by.
The wildlife did their bit to encourage Cliff on his voyage, a seagull flew along with him for a few miles, a fish jumped on to the kayak, offering himself as Cliff’s dinner, and ababy porpoise surfaced off the bow.
Well done Cliff..
