How far (in km) must he now travel to reach base camp?
An explorer is caught in a whiteout (in which the snowfall is so thick that the ground cannot be distinguished from the sky) while returning to base camp. He was supposed to travel due north for 4.5 km, but when the snow clears, he discovers that he actually traveled 8.9 km at 35o north of due east. How far (in km) must he now travel to reach base camp?
This is more an exercise in trigonometry than physics. We need to solve the triangle given two sides and the included angle (which is 55 degrees). Use c^2 = a^2 + b^2 -2ab cos C.
