Sit On Top Kayak Paddle
what is a good kayak for me?
tandem, looking to paddle long distances’, in saltwater and freshwater, and need one to hold alot of gear for camping, looking for one you sit in, NOT sit on top.
also i said i was looking for a tandem one, but what would be a good kayak for the above, but a single person one as well.
To cover long distances and haul a lot of gear, you’ll want to look at sea kayaks, even if you’re not planning to go on the open ocean. They’ll have the combination of speed and volume you’re looking for.
For single sea kayaks, just about anything in the 16-18 foot range will work. My personal favorite for long trips is the NDK Explorer. I don’t have as much experience in tandems. I’ve paddled the 23-foot Triton some (a double version of the Explorer). It’s a lot of fun for taking out for a day, but it doesn’t have as much volume as some other doubles (you’re now packing for 2 people in one boat). It also doesn’t come standard with a rudder– you can usually do without a rudder on a single boat, but most tandems will be much easier to paddle with one.
But I don’t know enough about you or your paddling ambitions to make a specific recommendation. Some of the magazines like Sea Kayaker and Canoe & Kayak come out with their buyers’ guides this time of year, which list almost every model from every manufacturer. Also check out reviews on paddling.net. And most importantly, go and visit kayak shops and start demoing boats yourself.
