Monopods are used to provide a stable base for your camera, not a stick, because you can mount your camera photo on it, adjust the height and moving. it is much more mobile then tripods. in situations such as sports photography, you can move the Pan the camera and subject, a monopod is very useful. If you use a tripod you have to hold the handle and move the entire camera while keeping an eye on the viewfinder and one hand on the trigger. Well, if it is really a glorified stick then it is always worth the money =)
